Chairman’s Message: Celebrating and Honoring Our Past: 2018 marks WMIA’s 40thDave1 anniversary—that is, the 40th anniversary of the merger between the Woodworking Machinery Importers Association (WMIA) and the Woodworking Machinery Distributors Association (WMDA). In WMIA’s history, as well as the history of its predecessor organizations, there have been a large number of individuals who have provided leadership and vision through the years. To honor those who have made outstanding contributions to the Association, WMIA’s Board of Directors created the Hall of Honor. WMIA Chairman of the Board Dave Rakauskas provides some input into the creation of the Hall of Honor, and who is eligible to be inducted. Mahalo Nui Loa (Thank You Very Much), Maui! By all accounts, the 2018 Woodworking Industry Conference (WIC), held last month in Maui, Hawaii, was a tremendous success. It was one of the biggest conferences in recent history, with over 310 WMIA and WMMA members and their families in attendance. Attendees heard from speakers on a number of different topics, from sales and using technology to enhanceMauiPic the customer experience, to perspectives from manufacturing executives and an economic outlook. There were numerous opportunities for business development and networking, and many attendees participated in activities including a golf tournament, the annual 5K run/walk, volleyball, and a tour of the Maui Tropical Plantation. Mark Your Calendars for WIC 2019…It’s not too early to start thinking about WIC 2019, which will beOmni Amelia Island held April 2-5, 2019, at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort in Amelia Island, Florida! Hotel reservations and conference registration should be available later this summer, and the special conference rate at the Omni will be available from the Saturday prior to the conference through the Saturday afterward. More details to follow, but get ready for another fantastic WIC!!

2018 Wooden Globe Award Winners Salute Excellence: During WIC 2018, two companies and an Wooden Globe Award_FINALeducator were honored with WMIA’s Wooden Globe Awards. Since 1988, the Association has used the Wooden Globe Awards program to recognize notable success and achievements, accomplished in part through the use of high technology machinery and software supplied by WMIA-member companies. Dura Supreme Cabinetry, Howard Lake, MN, received the Commitment to Excellence Through Technology Award. They were nominated by Jim Besonen of Wood Machinery Systems, Inc. Mary Lynn Heath of Lockdowel, Inc. nominated Lazy Lee USA, Cedar City, UT, the winner of this year’s Innovator of the Year Award. Joe Davis of the Dale Jackson Career Center, Lewisville, TX, received the Educator of the Year Award, for which he was nominated by Erich Mazurek of Maze Machinery, LLC. WMIA Inducts First Class of Honorees into Hall of Honor: As mentioned in Dave Rakauskas’ Jim Scarlettmessage, the Association’s Board of Directors recently created the WMIA Hall of Honor to commemorate WMIA’s 40th anniversary and honor those who contributed to the Association’s success through the years.? During the recent Woodworking Industry Conference (WIC) in Maui, 29 individuals, including WMIA’s founders as well as early leaders of both WMIA and WMDA, were inducted into the Hall of Honor. One honoree, Jim Scarlett of Scarlett, Inc., was present in Hawaii to be recognized for his leadership as a former WMDA president and a longtime volunteer leader of both associations. All inductees will receive a commemorative plaque and their names will kept on a perpetual plaque at WMIA’s headquarters office. To view the first class of honorees, visit /d25/hall-of-honor/. Member Profile: Quis Machinery, Inc.: Quis Machinery, Inc. was started in Statesville, NC in 1953 byJDing4 Francis R. Quis.? In 1979, Frank Quis, Jr. purchased the distributorship from his father and moved it to Southern Pines, NC three years later. Then, on January 1, 2017, Jason Dingess became the new president/owner of Quis Machinery. In this member profile, Dingess discusses how this distributor member is completely focused on the needs of their customers, and talks about what he sees in the future for the company and the industry as a whole. Member Spotlight: Jason Dingess, Quis Machinery, Inc.: With strong roots in North Carolina, Jason Dingess, president/owner of Quis Machinery, looks back to what led him to his life’s dream: owningJDing6 his own business. As far back as he can remember, Jason has wanted to own his own company where he has the direct opportunity to help people. Dingess said that every time he would visit the James L. Taylor Manufacturing plant in Poughkeepsie, NY, he felt different than when he would visit other plants. He explained this feeling to the company’s president, Michael Burdis, who stated that he believes it is because everybody there shows up and asks themselves what they can do to move the needle a little bit further, every day. “What if we all said that to ourselves every day,” questioned Dingess. “Not what do I have to get done today, but rather, what could I do to move the needle closer to my goals, towards what I want to accomplish.” Read more of this issue’s spotlight on Jason Dingess.
